2010 FIFA World Cup: Villa strikes, Portugal dreams End

Group stage of FIFA World Cup 2010 has been ended today. There were 48 matches detained over the last 14 days with minimum 2 and maximum 4 matches being taken place per day. Out of 32 teams participating, 16 have progressed to the knock out stage, while other 16 sides have been eliminated from the match.There were 101 goals in 48 matches averaging 2.10 goals per match. But its Unfortunately, this is the lowest scoring rate in group stage since the number of participating teams was increased to 32 in 1998 World Cup. There were 5 matches that finished up without producing any goal. Portugal’s 7-0 win against North Korea was the highest margin victory.

Round of 16, the first stage of the knock-out round, starts from 26 June. There will be 8 matches in the space of 4 days- meaning 2 matches per day. The losing teams would be knocked out of the tournament match, while the winning teams would reach the quarter final. So, round of 16 would see 8 more teams to be eliminated from the tournament.

If a match ends up in a draw after 90 minutes of playing, there will be 30 minutes of extra time split into two 15-minute periods. If the tie is still not broken, then penalty shootout would come into effect to break the tie between the two sides. In penalty shootout, each team is allowed to take 5 penalties and the team with highest number of goals from those 5 penalties is declared winner of the match. However, if the match is still tied, then ‘sudden death’ is used to decide the winner.

FIFA 2010 Group E results: Japan vs. Denmark 3-1

Japan dominated over Denmark in all departments and they scored at expected interval, beating Denmark 3-1. With this Group E conflict ended with Holland and Japan at top of the table. Japan will face South American Paraguay and Holland will face the Slovakia.

Two amazing free-kicks from Keisuke Honda and Yasuhito Endo in the first half and a late Shinji Okazaki strike were sufficient for Japan to beat Denmark 3-1 at Royal Bafokeng Stadium and claim a place in the Round of 16. With their victory, Japan, who will next look Group F winners Paraguay at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on 29 June, ended the hopes of a Denmark side who fell at the first difficulty for the first time.

World champion Italy eliminated, Slovakia advance


JOHANNESBURG: For the first time in World Cup history, both finalists of the previous champions failed to advance from the first round as reigning champions. Italy were eliminated from South Africa 2010 Thursday with a 2-3 loss against Slovakia, who used their first forever World Cup triumph to advance to the Round of 16.


Robert Vittek goaled in the 25th and 73rd minutes for a 2-0 lead at Ellis Park Stadium. Antonio Di Natale tried to pulled a goal back in the 81st minute. But Kamil Kopunek decided the match with his score in the 89th though Fabio Quagliarella made it 3-2 in the second minute of walk out time.Italy became just the fourth title-holder to fail to advance from the first stage following themselves in 1950, Brazil in 1966 and France in 2002.The 2006 finalists France were eliminated before in the tournament from Group A. And Italy failed to make it long-ago the first round for the first time since 1974.

World Cup debuts Slovakia completed second in Group F with four points behind Paraguay, while mighty Italy were last with two points.In the Round of 16, Slovakia take on the Group E winners - most likely the Netherlands.
